He Loves His House

I’ve been meditating recently on the two accounts in the Gospels where Yeshua ran the money-changers and animal sellers out of the temple complex. One is in John 2 right after He turned the water into wine at the wedding in Cana, and the other one is in Matthew 21 a few days before He let the people crucify Him.

The first time this happened He made a whip, drove them out of the temple complex along with the animals, knocked over the money-changers’ tables, and said, “Get these things out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market?” That day His disciples remembered a verse in Psa. 69:9 that said, “Zeal for Your house will devour me.”

The second time He drove out of the temple grounds those who were buying and those who were selling. He turned over the money-changers’ tables, knocked over the benches of those who were selling pigeons and said, “It has been written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it into a den of robbers!”

Both instances of Yeshua cleansing the Temple was in the few days right before the Festival of Pesach (Passover) began.  If you’re not familiar with the Jewish feasts, before Pesach begins, Jewish houses were totally cleaned of all leaven.  Not one speck of leaven could be found in a typical Jewish home right before Passover. Yeshua was cleansing His Father’s house of leaven.  Why am I writing about this now instead of the end of March when Pesach begins? I am completely in awe of Yeshua’s zeal for His Father’s house, the house of prayer. He never did anything He didn’t see His Abba doing first. We can be confident that everything Yeshua did was what God was feeling.  He was acting on what He saw in the heavenlies.

There are many many more truths in these two passages of scripture of which I have only begun to scratch the surface.  I am undone by Abba’s love for His house. His house is the house of prayer. Why does He love His house so much? I don’t fully know yet, but I would venture to say that it has something to do with His love for us and His desire for communion with us. He wants to see His purposes accomplished here as they are in heaven.

Don’t you love the Word of God?!  There are so many treasures buried there!

This is part of the Temple complex today where Yeshua might have run off the merchants and money-changers.
